Up here in Northeast Ohio most men know that you don’t want to forget Sweetest Day but the rest of the world probably doesn’t know much about this unique holiday.
Herbert Birch Kingston, a Cleveland philanthropist and candy company employee is credited as starting Sweetest Day which is celebrated the third Saturday in October annually. The first Sweetest Day was on October 10, 1921 and organized by 12 confectioners (candy makers).
Sweetest Day is often mistakenly attributed to Hallmark or American Greetings – two companies that have nothing to do with the holiday’s formation but do benefit from it every year – especially in the Midwest.
